Earlier this month, I visited the campus of Saint Vincent College to meet with four of our Sister Thea Bowman Scholars and members of the campus community who play an important role in their success. These visits are among the most rewarding parts of my work as they provide opportunities to listen, learn, encourage, and ensure that our Scholars are thriving spiritually and academically.

During my time on college campus, I meet with staff from Student Success and Campus Ministry to explore ways our Scholars can deepen their engagement in the spiritual and day-to-day life of the college. We discussed how faith formation and leadership development are interconnected at a Catholic college like Saint Vincent. These opportunities empower our Scholars to succeed in the classroom, while also forming them into confident and compassionate leaders who are grounded in their values.

It is also during these visits that I meet with staff from Financial Aid and Student Accounts to ensure the Scholars’ are up to date on their accounts. If not, we work together to find a solution, which is always a reminder of why the Foundation’s mission is so vital. Sometimes the difference between staying in school and having to leave comes down to just a few hundred dollars. Thanks to our generous donors, we are blessed to help close that gap when we can. This is one of many ways we remove obstacles to help support our Scholars in their four-year pursuit of a college degree.

Every visit I make to a campus to meet with our scholars reminds me of the importance of our partnerships with colleges like Saint Vincent and our shared commitment to helping our Scholars grow in faith and purpose. Sister Thea often reminded us to “do the little things well.” For me, that means ensuring every Scholar knows they are seen, supported, and capable of greatness.
